PY 7010L - Biopsychosocial Aspects of Medical Disorders

Biopsychosocial Aspects of Medical Disorders explores the epidemiology, etiology, assessment, and psychological treatment of medical disorders commonly encountered in clinical health psychology through a biopsychosocial framework. Students will examine the interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors in the manifestation and management of conditions affecting the cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, gynecologic, immune, nervous, pulmonary, and urologic systems. Through studying these conditions, students will gain an understanding of unique clinical and ethical considerations working in an integrated care environment. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the role of stress, coping mechanisms, behavioral interventions, and patient adherence in conditions. Additionally, students will explore evidence-based approaches to prevention and treatment, including behavioral medicine interventions, psychophysiological techniques, interdisciplinary collaboration, and culturally responsive care in medical and healthcare settings.  (3 credit hours)
