PY 6002L - Introduction to Child and Adolescent Treatment

This course provides an in-depth exploration of therapeutic and developmental considerations when working with children and adolescents, integrating theory, assessment, and evidence-based interventions. Students will examine major theoretical approaches, including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, attachment-based, play therapy, family systems, and trauma-informed models, with a focus on developmentally appropriate techniques for engaging young clients. Emphasis will be placed on case conceptualization within a systemic framework, considering the influence of family dynamics, school environments, peer relationships, and cultural factors in treatment planning. Students will also learn to apply individual, family, and community-based interventions, develop skills in rapport-building, and explore ethical and legal considerations specific to child and adolescent therapy. Through case studies, experiential learning, and applied exercises, students will gain the foundational competencies needed to provide effective and developmentally sensitive therapeutic care for children, adolescents, and their families.  (3 credit hours)
