PY 420 - Basic Psychopathology


This course surveys major mental disorders and theories of their etiology from a biopsychosocial approach. A broad range of human disorders are covered including bipolar, depressive, anxiety, personality, trauma, substance, schizophrenia/psychotic, neurocognitive, neurodevelopmental, and sexual. Cognitive/behavioral, psychodynamic, humanistic/existential, and systems approaches will be introduced, so as to provide the foundation for a broad understanding of psychopathology. Students in Basic Psychopathology will learn the current DSM/ICD approach to diagnosis and classification, and this approach is critiqued for its strengths and weaknesses. Cultural and developmental factors related to mental illness are emphasized. (3 credit hours)
