PY 420D - Psychopathology I


This course is the first of a sequence in psychopathology.  Students learn the DSM approach to diagnosis and classification, including a critique of its strengths and weaknesses.  Neurodevelopmental disorders, schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, bipolar and related disorders, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, trauma and stressor related disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders, dissociative disorders, and somatic symptom and related disorders are reviewed from an integrated biopsychosocial perspective, with an emphasis on learning the essential features and clinical presentation of these disorders, what is known about their etiology, and options for appropriate treatment. Cultural and developmental factors related to mental illness are emphasized. Students are introduced to the biopsychosocial model and its application to clinical case examples. (3 credits)
