PY 464 - Basic Intervention: Cognitive-Behavioral

This course addresses the basic assumptions of cognitive-behavioral theory, reviews the major theorists, and introduces the student to issues of assessment, treatment planning, case conceptualization, evaluation of treatment efficacy, therapeutic technique, and intervention utilizing the CBT lens. The course will provide an overview of the traditional and Contextual CBT theoretical orientation. Through readings, lectures, and in-class hands-on assignments, students will master the basic theoretical concepts of cognitive-behavior therapy and assessment and how these theories are applied in a culturally sensitive manner to select adult (and some pediatric) disorders. Students will learn how to build a therapeutic relationship and develop beginning expertise in several cognitive-behavior therapy interventions. As a result of taking this course, students will be prepared to further explore cognitive-behavioral treatment approaches. (3 credits)
