PC 420 - Basic Psychopathology This course surveys major mental disorders and theories of their etiology from a biopsychosocial approach. Disorders of childhood and adolescence are emphasized as well as related disorders affecting parents/caretakers including bipolar, depressive, anxiety, personality, trauma, substance, schizophrenia/psychotic, neurocognitive, neurodevelopmental, and sexual. Cognitive/behavioral, psychodynamic, humanistic/existential, and systems approaches will be introduced, so as to provide the foundation for a broad understanding of psychopathology. Students in Basic Psychopathology will learn the DSM approach to diagnosis and classification, and this approach is critiqued for its strengths and weaknesses. Cultural and developmental factors related to mental illness are emphasized. (3 Credits)
