PY 421X - Advanced Psychopathology


Prerequisite: PY 420X:  Basic Psychopathology. This course continues the biopsychosocial survey of major mental disorders according to the DSM and ICD approaches to diagnosis and classification. The following disorders are covered:, Neurodevelopmental disorders, Feeding and Eating Disorders Elimination Disorders, Sleep-Wake Disorders, Disruptive, Impulse-Control, and Conduct Disorders, Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders, Cognitive Disorders, Paraphilic Disorders, and Other Factors That May Need Clinical Attention . Diagnosing the whole patient in context is covered. Developmental issues in psychopathology figure prominently in this class, including child and adolescent manifestations of mood and anxiety disorders.  Cultural, and interprofessional practice factors related to mental illness are emphasized throughout. Common presentations of psychopathology in medical settings will be discussed. Screening and interviewing techniques in diagnosing are covered as well. (3 credits)
