PY 436 - Personality Assessment
Prerequisite(s): PY 434 . This course introduces the student to personality assessment and the basic clinical skills necessary to begin practicum. The course focuses on assessment as science-based, and grounded in the research literature pertinent to assessment, and the specific measures used in the course. Emphasis is placed on the administration, scoring, and interpretation of objective (self-report) personality instruments, such as the MMPI-2/A, PAI and/or MCMI; and projective (performance) personality instruments such as the Thematic Apperception Test, Incomplete Sentence Blank and/or Projective Drawings. Students will learn to conduct and document risk assessments, and will practice giving feedback to clients. Emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking skills, the ability to integrate various types of test data, and to integrate test data with background history, cultural considerations, health issues, etc. so as to gain a comprehensive understanding of the individual. Students will learn to communicate the results of testing, showing integration of assessment information, case conceptualization, differential diagnosis, and begin to formulate effective treatment plans. Students will explore the course content and related skills in a lab. (3 credit hours)
