PY 678 - Foundations in Professional Practice and Research I

The Foundations in Professional Practice and Research is a two-course series (fall and spring semester) in which students are introduced to the professional practice of clinical psychology including the practice of research and scholarship. Specifically, students are oriented to the relevant policies and procedures of the Chicago School and the Clinical PsyD program, as well as the clinical training structure of the program (OPT) and APA ethical and practice guidelines, and introduced to the habits and skills of self-evaluation, reflective practice and self-care. Students will also review the core competencies and skills of the profession, and the manner in which the program comprehensively evaluates student progress. Students will choose an area for research/scholarship that complements that of his or her faculty advisor (who is the instructor for this course), critically review and synthesize relevant literature, develop a research methodology and research questions, a program, or other scholarship projects consistent with the literature review. Students may also engage in data collection and analysis, as well as other activities relevant to the chosen research/scholarship project. Throughout this course, students will engage in the habits and skills of critical thinking, self-evaluation, reflective practice and self-care via engagement in experiential activities, research, in class discussions and professional interactions with peers, instructor and others who might be involved in the research project.
