PY 420X - Basic Psychopathology


This course surveys major theories of the etiology of mental disorders emphasizing the biopsychosocial approach and familiarizes students with the DSM and ICD approaches to diagnosis and classification. The following disorders are covered: Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders, Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders, Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders, Dissociative Disorders, Sexual Dysfunctions, Gender Dysphoria, and Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders. Cultural, developmental, and interprofessional practice factors related to mental illness are emphasized throughout. Common presentations of psychopathology in medical settings will be discussed. Screening and interviewing techniques in diagnosing are covered as well. (3 credits)
