SP 528 - Diversity in Clinical Practice This course provides a basic framework to help students understand how individual differences, abilities, and disabilities in development and learning are affected by social, cultural, ethnic, experiential, biological, socioeconomic, gender, and linguistic factors. The framework enables the student to have greater sensitivity in working with diverse students and how intervention strategies can be selected and implemented based on individual characteristics, strengths, and needs. Another equally important focus is an understanding of the mechanisms used to maintain privilege and the balance of power, as well as the methods used to limit, oppress and restrict members of less privileged groups. The course specifically addresses the psychological, socio-political, and economic impact that power and privilege has on our understanding of culture, diversity, gender, ethnicity, religion, class, race, immigrant status, language, geographic issues, and sexual orientation.
