PY 4961 - Advanced Intervention: Community Psychology
Prerequisite(s): PY 443 , PY 446 , and PY 468 . Community psychology is concerned with the promotion of wellness at the personal, interpersonal, organizational and community levels. A preventive and strength-based philosophy is utilized within community psychology in an effort to understand the ecological context of human experiences, initiate action research, and implement social change. Community psychologists combine psychological techniques with flexible research design and concrete measures to find and document the most effective solutions to various sociopolitical and cultural issues. In this course, students will be introduced to the theories, historical and philosophical foundations, and methodologies of community psychology. Topics discussed will include prevention, primary and secondary change, empowerment, and social issues impacting individual and community health. Students will learn skills to intervene within communities such as through action research, policy analysis, and health promotion. (2 credit hours)
