PF 618 - Violence and Risk Assessment
This course provides students with the history and introductory foundation for conducting risk for violence evaluations, as well as provides an overview regarding the manner in which risk opinions are communicated to referral sources. Students gain an understanding of relevant case law, empirically-based static/dynamic risk factors, and assessment tools used to conduct violence and risk evaluations, as well as management strategies employed to manage or reduce risk in various environments and settings, with a variety of populations. Students learn about base rates, nomothetic variables of interest, and idiographic factors affecting violence risk and risk management. Primary focus will be on conducting violence risk assessments with individuals with major mental illness, and for civil commitment. Secondary focus will be on assessment of risk in other populations (e.g., prison inmates/jail detainees, sexual offenders). Practical exercises drawn from actual cases will be used to illustrate key concepts. (2 credits)
