PC 456 - Psychometric Theory and Quantitative Methods

This course is designed to teach students psychometric theory, experimental and quasi-experimental research designs at both the conceptual and applied levels. Areas of emphasis include types of test related reliability (i.e., factors that affect reliability, inter-rater reliability, test-retest, and internal-consistency reliability), validity (i.e., construct, content, face, criterion-related, concurrent, and predictive validity), as well as experimental control, reliability, sampling, correlational research, single subject designs, independent group designs, repeated measures and complex designs, and design confounds. Descriptive and Inferential research methods will be discussed. Students will learn how to evaluate the role of tests in the selection thereof and their concomitant strengths and limitations. Students will also learn how to generate research designs, how to select variables for study, rule out major threats to validity, determine if there is a reliable effect, how to evaluate ethical practices, and how to critique designs in psychological research. This course will require students to designate the designs utilized in published research, identify and explain design confounds, and think critically about published psychological research.
